Our Story

The three legs of the central figure represent a trinacria, or triangle, from the Greek name for Sicily, Trinacria, as well as the island's three corners: Peloro (northeast), Passero (southeast), and Lilibeo (west).

Perhaps for this very reason, it was an ancient custom to place a trinacria behind the door of the house, as a symbol of protection, or to decorate vases, houses and villas with designs representing it as a symbol of good luck.

Its origins can be traced back to ancient Greece, where it was associated with the goddess Athena. Over time, the symbol was adopted by Sicilian rulers as a sign of strength and power. The Winged Head of Medusa has become so ubiquitous in Sicily that it can be found on everything from jewelry to cathedrals.

Trinacria Italian Restaurant is proudly family-owned by husband and wife Antonio and Giuditta Lo Piccolo, who both share deep Italian and Sicilian roots. After marrying in the United States, they were inspired to bring the flavors of their homeland to Nellysford, Virginia.

As we say in Italy, "To get to the heart of a person, you go through the stomach."
